DE&I Sponsored Art Exhibit Preview: "INDIGENOUS Selections from MATRIX PRESS" at Radius Gallery

Thursday, October 19, 2023 (4:00 PM - 6:00 PM) (MDT)

Description

Your DE&I Committee is excited to partner with Radius Gallery to welcome MOR members to an exclusive TWOFER art preview, tour, and conversation on Oct. 19th from 4pm to 6pm.

Part I: 4 - 5pm - Radius Gallery owner Lisa Simon will give MOR members a private preview of ambitious Indigenous murals planned to surround NW Energy’s electric substation walls in Caras park. Next summer this area will be transformed by poetry and art created by Salish and Blackfeet artists. Lisa will especially talk about the North side of the wall, which will convey a visual history of ledger art, beginning with traditional buffalo hide-paintings of Plains Indians to contemporary ironic takes on that emphasize art as an act of resiliency and protest. Lisa has a traditional (and rare) buffalo hide painting to show you!

Part II: 5 - 6pm - Artist talk: INDIGENOUS: Selections from MATRIX PRESS. Based on an exhibit of original prints by nine Native a American artists who have created work at UM’s MATRIX press in recent years. Matrix founder Professor Jim Bailey will introduce visitors to the cutting-edge printmaking program and tell us about the notable printmakers who have created the limited edition prints in collaboration with UM students. Proceeds from art sales help raise funds for the future artists visits.

This event is free to attend for MOR members and refreshments will be provided.
